(a) If a routine or repeat sample is total coliform positive, the certified laboratory performing the analysis shall analyze that total coliform positive culture medium to determine if fecal coliforms are present, except that the laboratory may test for Escherichia coli instead of fecal coliforms. The laboratory shall report a positive total coliform bacteria analysis to the owner and to the department within 24 hours after obtaining the result. (b) If the laboratory confirms the presence or absence of fecal coliforms or Escherichia coli, the laboratory shall notify the department, by telephone or by facsimile transmission, of those results by the close of business on the day the laboratory notifies the owner.
