The following are design requirements for carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas lasers: (1) A sufficient thickness of firebrick, asbestos, or other fire retardant material shall be provided as a backstop for the beam to provide fire protection. (2) The use of this type of laser shall be such as to preclude the exposure of individuals to hazardous levels of ionizing and/or ultra-violet radiation. (3) Reflections of the infrared laser beam shall be attenuated by enclosure of the beam and target area or by the use of eyewear constructed of a material opaque to the carbon dioxide wavelength, such as plexiglass.
