The medical certification shall be completed and signed within 24 hours after death or delivery, by the physician in charge during the illness or condition that resulted in death or in attendance at or after delivery, except when an official inquiry or inquest is necessary or an extension of time is granted under 7 AAC 05.550 - 7 AAC 05.570. If a physician was not in attendance, another person in attendance or a sub-registrar shall sign the certification, stating the facts and giving the apparent cause of death to the best of the person's knowledge; this shall be sufficient unless the state medical examiner directs otherwise, or unless an official inquiry or inquest is determined to be necessary. In the absence of another person described in this section, the local registrar shall complete the certification from the best information available.
