Section 7.35.100. Transportation of human remains.

  • 	(a)  The transportation of human remains shall be permitted only in a container accommodating the entire body. The container must be of wood, metal, plastic, canvas, reinforced nylon, composition board, or other suitable material.  
    	(b)  The transportation of remains of an individual who, at death, had any of the infectious diseases listed in 7 AAC 35.090(d) is permitted only under the following conditions:  
    		(1) the human remains must be placed in a container accommodating the entire body; and  
    		(2) the container must be placed in a suitable shipping container that completely encases the body and provides a protective barrier between the body and the environment.  
    	(c)  When the human remains cannot reach the intended destination within 24 hours after the death, the department may embalm the remains, upon receiving permission from the deceased's family, next of kin, or a person legally responsible for the burial of the deceased, and place the remains in a suitable container accommodating the entire body for transport.  
    	(d)  A container accommodating the entire body is required to transport human remains in all instances except when the human remains are transported in a hearse or other mortuary vehicle.  
    	(e)  The transportation of a diagnostic specimen collected in an autopsy for testing or examination is not subject to this section.  
    	(f)  If an outbreak of an unusual infectious disease or other condition of public health importance occurs, human remains that may have been exposed to the disease or condition, must be placed in an airtight, leak proof, and puncture resistant container. The department may require additional precautions as medically indicated to assure the effective containment of the human remains and prevent the spread of infectious disease.
