Section 8.05.090. Occupations in the operation of a sawmill, lath mill, shingle mill, or cooperage-stock mill.

(a) All occupations in the operation of a sawmill, lath mill, shingle mill, or cooperage-stock mill are dangerous and prohibited to minors, except the following: (1) work in office or in repair or maintenance shops; (2) straightening, marking, or tallying lumber on the dry chain or the dry shop sorter; (3) pulling lumber from the dry chain; (4) cleanup in the lumberyard; (5) piling, handling, or shipping of cooperage-stock in yards or storage sheds other than operating or assisting in the operation of power-driven equipment; (6) clerical work in yards or shipping sheds, such as done by ordermen, tallymen, and shipping clerks; (7) cleanup work outside shake and shingle mills, except when the mills are in operation; (8) splitting shakes manually from pre-cut and split blocks with a froe and mallet, except inside the mill building or cover; (9) packing shakes into bundles when done in conjunction with splitting shakes manually with a froe and mallet, except inside the building or cover; (10) manual loading of bundles of shingles or shakes into trucks or railroad cars, if the employer has on file a statement from a licensed doctor of medicine or osteopathy certifying the minor capable of performing this work without injury. (b) The exceptions in this section do not apply to a portable sawmill the lumberyard of which is used only for the temporary storage of green lumber and in connection with which no office or repair or maintenance shop is ordinarily maintained.
