(a) The department shall use identifiable health information collected and maintained by the department under AS 18.05 or AS 18.15 to accomplish the essential public health services and functions for which the information was originally acquired. These uses include (1) maintaining lists and registries of immunizations and conditions of public health importance; (2) conducting epidemiological investigations; (3) providing public health nursing services; and (4) taking emergency actions and legal measures to protect individuals and the general public from adverse effects of diseases or other conditions of public health importance. (b) A public health agent may provide identifiable health information to the state medical examiner's office to assist in determining a deceased individual's cause or manner of death. (c) A public health agent who is using identifiable health information shall use the minimum amount of information reasonably believed to be necessary to accomplish the public health purpose.
